In January 2016, A/Prof Miniter travelled
pro bono to Jamkhed, India with the Comprehensive Rural Health Project.
In cooperation with Prof Marco Lanzetta from Italy a hand surgeon and Dr Bruno Mastropasqua from Canada, a plastic surgeon, over 250 patients were reviewed and 65 essential operative procedures were conducted.
At least 1.3 billion people worldwide lack access to the most basic healthcare, often because there are no health workers to take care of them. “The global population is growing, but the number of health workers is stagnating or even falling in many of the places where they are needed most,” said Lee Jong-wook, Director General of the World Health Organisation.
This latest mission follows upon those previous and was an unqualified success. We look forward to the next mission to impoverished peoples who lack even basic health care and whose surgical needs are extreme.
