Often, especially after a more serious knee injury, there may be more than one ligament injured. It is not uncommon to have a combination of ligaments injured. Sometimes other structures such the menisci, and joint surface regions are also injured. The MRI taken prior to surgery can be very helpful in assessing these more complex injuries, allowing precise planning.
For instance it is quite common to injure the ACL, as well as the MCL and perhaps the postero-lateral corner of the knee. This may require an altogether different treatment algorithm. Such multiple ligament surgery is not uncommon. This is an area in which A/Prof Miniter is well versed and very experienced. He will discuss this matter with you prior to surgery where at all possible. Sometimes, however, the true nature of the knee instability is not entirely clear until you are under anaesthetic, when the knee can be properly examined.
